Tushie Montgomery Architects

2016 to 2024 ... TMA taught me self-sufficiency and how to step up and take each new challenge on with excitement and determination. Historical, Multi-family, Religious, Municipal, and Hospitality are the major typologies I worked in with a focus on building design, interior architecture, unit design, construction documents, and construction administration. I pride myself on my balance of creativity and practicality when proposing and executing designs for clients and enjoy the process of understanding their vision and communicating their desires back to them.

  • Lead interdisciplinary teams as project manager through all phases on ROSA Apartments from 2019 to 2023 and up to construction administration on Home2 Kalispell from 2023 to 2024.

  • Worked on many projects designing building exteriors, apartment units, common area and interior amenities, interior architecture, and architecture site elements.

  • Documented many projects through my years at TMA. Working on all aspects of the construction documents; code sections, plans & RCPs, sections & details for exterior & interior building elements.

  • Oversaw all physical & digital marketing efforts at TMA. Spearheading a brand refresh that overhauled all visual elements of the TMA brand that had not been updated for many years. Logo, website, title blocks, documents, fonts, colors, etc.

Shelter Architecture

Summer of 2015 ... Shelter was my first experience in a firm setting. I found it immediately intuitive to fall into the existing work that the Shelter team assigned me and as my time there continued I had confidence in taking on new projects, a few smaller ones even on my own. Being a part of that intimate team, I was invited to get involved in all areas of the company during my stay.

  • Fostering a strong colaborative connection with my design team is perhaps the most important aspect of the job for me. I would extend the importance of this connection to the client and to the contractor as well.

  • A balance between work and life is important to me. Shelter taught me the relation between efficiency and productivity and how to use time effectively to minimize excess crunch from projects.

  • A connection with the community is an important aspect to Shelters work. Donating time and resources to the community when possible to help those in need and in general focusing on creating designs that bettered all of our lives.

NDSU

2011 to 2016 ... My experience at NDSU was one of absorption. Accumulating as many shapes and materials as I could to form my taste and perspective till I could confidently say I am a designer. I discovered my favorite architects, Richard Rodgers and Peter Zumthor, as well as honed my design sense focusing on detailed tectonic connections and honest materials.

  • Design through tectonic moment is such a satisfying way to create space, control light, and move people through architecture.

  • The process of exploring artistically and poetically in our physical environment to discover a design concept and direction.

  • Each material has a story to tell and an emotional impact on our experience of architecture. Material is also the part of architecture that moves through time and continues to tell the story of a space as it ages.

Through A Screen Darkly

My senior thesis was an exploration into the world of film and how its language of frame, montage, light, and the distortion of time can be used to enhance the way we communicate through the architectural design process as well as our built environment.

Personal Work & Interests

I always need to be creating things and constantly have side projects and passions I am working on. I design furniture, do a bit of pottery, and have a personal goal of some day learning Japanese.

I am a lover of music, film, and language. I host a standing Dungeons & Dragons group that meets weekly where I am obsessed with drawings maps for my friends to explore.

  • I am always thinking of ways to better my immediate environment and I usually come to the conclusion that making it myself is the best way forward. I love being in the wood shop.

  • My mother is an artist and I learned to throw on the wheel from her skilled mentor Siri. Creating with clay is such a rewarding and peaceful process for me.

  • I started my language learning journey a while back with the hopes of learning as much as I could myself. I have since come to realize I need people to speak to, to further my Japanese. I would love to live in a place where Japanese people and culture are part of the community I live in so I can continue my language journey further but in the mean time continue my vocab studies.
